Law of Gearing

This law states that for transmitting constant angular velocity ratio, common normal to the contacting surfaces of mating teeth, at every instantaneous point of contact, must be passed through a fixed point on the line of centers of the two gears. The fixed point is called the pitch point which divides the line of centers in the inverse ratio of the angular velocities of the mating gears.

The law of gearing is mandatory to all the gears that the gear tooth profiles maintain the constant angular velocity ratio.

Let us consider that point C on the gear tooth is in contact with a point D on the other gear and the common normal passes through these points of contact.

Thus, centerline AB is divided at P by the common normal in the inverse ratio of the angular velocity of the two gears.

Thus, for the constant angular velocity ratio of the two gears the common normal at the point of contact of the two meshing teeth must pass through the pitch point.
