Halliburton is truly a competitor in the global marketplace. Globalization is a challenge, but engineers can cope with its forces by being flexible and adaptable and by focusing strategically on their careers. The reasons most often cited for moving to offshore locations are:
• Need to be in countries where products are sold
• Economic factors such as government tax policies, and high-tech wages Career Strategies:
1. Be a leading-edge engineer. Possess skills, knowledge and tools that will enable you to be a top-notch competitor.
2. Be a contributor. Always remember that contributors must carry their own weight. Your salary is paid out of the revenue that your contributions provide.
3. Be a true partner with your company. Your success will be their success, and their success will be your success.
4. Understand the competition. Study their products or services to determine gaps in satisfying customer wants or needs.
5. Constantly strive to provide products and services that satisfy your customers’ needs and exceed expectations.
I want to be clear that the Globalization of Engineering is NOT synonymous with Outsourcing. Outsourcing is a related issue, but one does not require the other.
Globalization of Engineering is the reality that design firms are operating in an environment where their competitors can come from anywhere in the world, the products need to serve a market that could be anywhere, the products need the ability to be sourced from anywhere, and that Engineering, as a team sport, no longer implies single, co-located teams
