Geotechnical Engineering is a specialized branch of civil engineering that focuses on the behavior, properties, and mechanics of earth materials—such as soil, rock, and groundwater—and their interaction with man-made structures. It involves the study, analysis, and design of foundations, slopes, retaining structures, embankments, tunnels, and underground facilities to ensure safety, stability, and long-term performance. Geotechnical engineers investigate subsurface conditions through site investigations, soil sampling, laboratory testing, and geophysical surveys to understand the physical, chemical, and mechanical characteristics of the ground. They apply principles of soil mechanics, rock mechanics, and foundation engineering to predict settlement, bearing capacity, slope stability, and the response of soils and rocks under various loading and environmental conditions.
