Questions and Answers

A: The hard boundary is the pipe volume: 4-inch Sch 40 ID is ~102 mm, giving ~0.025 m³. At 600 kPag you're only holding a few grams of air. With a 1/2-inch open drain, flow stops being choked very early, so discharge is fast but not instantaneous. That puts you in the tens of seconds to a couple of minutes range; assuming choked flow all the way or ignoring volume skews it badly.

A: The number that matters is one logic solver feeding multiple functions. Even if the pump is isolated, the alarm path may be shared. Bypassing locally can suppress response to a real upset elsewhere. The standard is aimed at common-cause exposure, not paperwork purity or blanket prohibitions.

A: The gating condition is physical travel before logic confidence. Until you've seen the valve move and proven air and mechanics, any PLC or DCS indication is meaningless. Doing simulation or screen checks first lets wiring or configuration errors hide until startup.

A: A few inches of trapped liquid is enough. With differential or displacer-type measurement, a blocked low-point creates a static head that looks like level even in an empty vessel. Simulation modes and noise tend to create obvious flags or brief spikes, not a steady HH alarm.
