Why enroll

Professionals and students enroll in a Flow Assurance course primarily to master the complex technical skills required to prevent catastrophic pipeline blockages in oil and gas production. As the industry increasingly pushes into ultra-deepwater and harsher environments, managing the behavior of complex fluid mixtures—and preventing the formation of flow-stopping hazards like gas hydrates, wax deposition, and severe slugging—has become an economic and operational necessity. Gaining expertise in this high-demand, specialized field significantly accelerates career advancement, equipping engineers with the critical thermodynamic, hydraulic, and predictive modeling tools needed to safeguard multi-million dollar subsea assets and ensure uninterrupted production.

Is this course for you?

You should take this if

  • You work in Energy & Utilities or Oil & Gas Upstream
  • You're a Mechanical Engineering / Flow Assurance professional
  • You have 3+ years of hands-on experience in this field
  • You want to build skills in Engineering & Design

You should skip if

  • You're new to this field with no prior experience
  • You need a different specialisation outside Mechanical Engineering
  • You need fully self-paced, on-demand content

Course details

This course provides a comprehensive understanding of Flow Assurance, a critical engineering discipline dedicated to ensuring the uninterrupted, economical, and safe transport of reservoir fluids (oil, gas, and water) from the reservoir to processing facilities. As production moves into challenging environments like deepwater and subsea fields, managing fluid behavior under extreme pressures and temperatures is paramount.

Students will explore the physical phenomena, chemical mechanisms, and engineering strategies used to predict, prevent, and mitigate major flow obstructions. The curriculum bridges the gap between fluid thermodynamics and practical subsea/pipeline engineering.

Course suitable for

Key topics covered

Day 1: The Landscape, Terminology & architecture

Core Vocabulary of Oil and Gas :

        Major Components in Value Chain

        Different phases of project development

Oil and Gas System Architecture: Onshore, offshore, and Deepwater production hardware layouts.

What is Flow Assurance? And Why is it important?

Day 2: Fluid Behavior & The "Big Three" Blockage Risks

Fluid Characterization: Pressure-Volume-Temperature (PVT) analysis, sampling, and Equation of State (EOS) modelling.

Phase Behavior: Understanding phase envelopes, single-phase vs. multiphase fluid behaviour, and fluid properties.

Gas Hydrates: The "ice that burns" and how it instantly plugs pipelines.

Waxes & Asphaltenes: Understanding how crude oil turns into candles or tar inside a pipe.

Prevention vs. Remediation: The massive cost difference between preventing a clog vs. melting/cutting it out.

Day 3: Hydraulics, Slugging & Daily Field Operations

Pipeline Traffic Jams: Understanding multiphase flow (liquids and gases traveling together at different speeds).

Slugging: The physical impact of giant liquid waves hitting platforms and damaging equipment.

Operating Windows: How engineers define safe pressure and temperature limits for a project.

Transient Risks: Why starting up or shutting down a pipeline is the most dangerous phase for an asset.

Day 4: System Integrity

        Scales

        Corrosion

        Erosion and Sand.

        Chemical Management

Day 5: Production operations Engineering Tools

Overview of what commercial software like Olga and PipeSim actually predicts

The Energy Transition: How flow assurance principles apply to Carbon Capture (CO₂ transport) and Hydrogen pipelines.
