Course details
Objective: To understand measuring units used for specifying various properties and parameters of LPG, variety of Unit systems, Conversion between unit systems, application in practice
Subject description:
Any engineering quantity is expressed with a number and a unit, like length, weight, time, force, flow rate, pressure etc. There are number of systems that have evolved and in use currently. There are some fundamental units like length, mass, time, temperature. There are some derived units like density, force, pressure, flow rate, energy etc. As we know, the unit of pressure can be PSI, Kg/cm2, bar, pascal and many more. Similar is the case for almost every engineering quantity.
It is very very essential to understand 'one unit' of anything means how much quantity exactly. Then only any further action can be taken on that much quantity of that parameter. This understanding must be there for every person working on design, manufacturing, inspection, testing, installation etc.
This, module 2 of this series, will explain what are the different units as per different unit systems, namely FPS, MKS, CGS, SI etc., used for LPG related parameters. Names of the units, conversion of units from one system to another i.e. expressing equal quantities of a parameter in different units, is of prime importance. For example, in flow rate measurement, 1 m3/min. is equal to 264.2 US gpm or 220 UK gpm or 35.3 cfm. OR for pressure, 1kg/cm2 is equal to 14.22psi or 1 MPa equals 145psi. The code may mention test pressure in MPa and you may have pressure gauges marked in PSI.
Thorough knowledge of units is essential for satisfactory communication of required / expected performance; measurement and testing of performance; safety of equipment and surroundings.
Hence attending this module is very important for all.
