Questions and Answers

Q: You're at a COMAH site walkdown doing SMAW acceptance. The client PM asks you to confirm the sequence, and you quickly Google "how to verify WPS compliance during SMAW field acceptance". The weld is complete but not yet PWHT’d. What do you verify first before signing the ITP hold point?

A: A tempts people because paperwork feels administrative, but the WQTR-to-WPS link controls whether the weld was even allowed to be made. B looks efficient, but hardness before PWHT is meaningless and often fails by design. C is valid later, yet PWHT parameters don’t excuse an unqualified welder. D assumes NDT precedes all checks, but most ITPs gate NDT on confirmed welding compliance first.
