Course details

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the background, theory, and practical application of the ASME B31J Standard, which establishes improved flexibility factors and stress intensification factors (SIFs) for metallic piping components. The standard was developed to enhance the accuracy of piping stress analysis by incorporating results from extensive experimental testing and finite element analysis, thereby addressing limitations in traditional SIF and flexibility data used in piping design.

Participants will learn the fundamental concepts behind flexibility and stress intensification in piping systems and how these factors influence piping stress calculations. The course explains how the formulations in ASME B31J Standard differ from the traditional data found in ASME B31.3 Process Piping Code and other piping codes, and how these updated relationships can lead to more accurate and reliable stress predictions. Emphasis is placed on the theoretical basis of the standard, including the research and analytical methods used to develop the revised factors.
