Introduction to Multimodal Urban Transportation Systems (MUTS)

The Introduction to Multimodal Urban Transportation Systems (MUTS) course focuses on the planning, design, integration, and operation of multiple transportation modes within urban environments. The course explains how different transport systems—such as walking, cycling, buses, metro rail, suburban rail, intermediate public transport, and private vehicles—can be efficiently combined to provide safe, sustainable, and inclusive urban mobility.

The course covers the principles of multimodal transport planning, network integration, and intermodal connectivity. Emphasis is placed on passenger demand, travel behavior, accessibility, last-mile connectivity, and seamless transfers between modes. Learners study how land-use planning, policy frameworks, and intelligent transportation systems (ITS) support multimodal transport solutions. The course also addresses challenges such as congestion, emissions, safety, and equity in rapidly growing cities.

By the end of the course, learners gain the ability to understand urban mobility systems holistically and contribute to the planning and implementation of integrated, people-centric transportation solutions.
