Why enroll

This course is essential for civil engineers, geologists, and geoscientists involved in engineering geology, tunneling, slope stability, foundation design, and resource exploration. Understanding structural geology helps in assessing ground stability, locating weak zones, and predicting geological hazards such as faults and landslides. The course strengthens field interpretation skills and provides a strong base for advanced studies in tectonics, engineering geology, and geomechanics.

Is this course for you?

You should take this if

  • You work in Oil & Gas Upstream or Agriculture
  • You're a Geoscience / Civil & Structural professional
  • You have 3+ years of hands-on experience in this field
  • You prefer self-paced learning you can revisit

You should skip if

  • You're new to this field with no prior experience
  • You need a different specialisation outside Geoscience
  • You need live interaction with an instructor

Course details

The Structural Geology course focuses on the study of deformation of the Earth’s crust and the structures formed as a result of tectonic forces. It explains how rocks respond to stress and strain and how geological structures such as folds, faults, joints, and shear zones are formed, analyzed, and interpreted. The course provides the foundation for understanding crustal deformation processes and their implications in engineering, mining, petroleum exploration, and natural hazard assessment.

The course introduces stress–strain relationships in rocks, rheological behavior, and deformation mechanisms under brittle and ductile conditions. Emphasis is placed on geometric and kinematic analysis of geological structures, interpretation of structural maps and cross-sections, and field-based observation techniques. Learners also study regional tectonics and the relationship between structural geology and plate tectonics.
