About this role

What you'll be doing day-to-day.

We are seeking an active Authorized API 653 Aboveground Storage Tank Inspector to deliver high-impact certification preparation courses for candidates targeting the API 653 ICP Exam.

The instructor will train tank engineers, inspection technicians, and terminal integrity specialists through the complete API 653 Body of Knowledge, covering tank inspection, alteration, repair, rerating, and reconstruction. Training will focus on core standards (API Standard 653, API Std 650, API RP 651, API RP 652) and associated codes (ASME Section V & IX).

What you'll do

The core responsibilities expected from this role.

1. Course Delivery & Core Calculations

  • Facilitate 5-day intensive exam prep bootcamps or multi-week online evening cohorts aligned with API exam testing windows.

  • Guide candidates through both Closed-Book (definitions, inspection frequencies, recordkeeping) and Open-Book (code calculations and design review) exam strategies.

  • Master and instruct on core API 653/650 structural and integrity calculations:

    • Minimum required thickness ($t_{min}$) for tank shells (Variable-Design-Point method and 1-Foot Method).

    • Hydrostatic test height ($H_t$) and Maximum Allowable Working Pressure (MAWP).

    • Bottom plate minimum thickness calculations and settlement evaluation (out-of-plane settlement, edge settlement, planar tilt).

    • Critical zone assessment and remaining life / corrosion rate determinations ($STAR$ and $LTAR$).

    • Shell hot taps, lap-welded/butt-welded patch plate limits, and door sheet replacement design.

2. Tank Integrity, Cathodic Protection & Linings

  • Detail inspection frequencies for internal and external tank evaluations (routine in-service, external visual, ultrasonic thickness, and internal out-of-service intervals).

  • Cover internal tank lining selection, inspection, and failure modes per API RP 652.

  • Teach cathodic protection fundamentals, soil resistivity, and potential measurement criteria for tank bottom plates per API RP 651.

  • Explain non-destructive testing (NDT) applications for tank bottoms, shells, and roofs (e.g., MFL floor scanning, vacuum box testing, UT, RT, PT, MT per ASME Sec V).

  • Review ASME IX Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS/PQR) and welder qualifications tailored to tank repairs.

3. Candidate Coaching & Exam Readiness

  • Administer timed mock exams that replicate the 170-question API exam structure (110 closed-book / 60 open-book).

  • Review calculation mistakes, code look-up shortcuts, and common pitfalls in API 650/653 cross-referencing.

  • Assist candidates in validating their education and field experience qualifications prior to API portal submission.
