About this role

What you'll be doing day-to-day.

We are seeking an active Authorized API 510 Pressure Vessel Inspector with strong field credentials and technical delivery experience to lead exam-preparation bootcamps for candidates preparing for the API Individual Certification Program (ICP) API 510 Exam.

The trainer will guide mechanical engineers, NDT specialists, and plant inspectors through the API 510 Body of Knowledge, covering ASME Section VIII (Div 1) shell/head design, ASME Section IX welding procedures, ASME Section V NDE methods, and API recommended practices (API RP 571, 572, 576, 577).

What you'll do

The core responsibilities expected from this role.

1. Curriculum Delivery & Code Calculations

  • Facilitate 5-day intensive bootcamps or multi-week virtual evening cohorts structured around the API ICP exam window.

  • Train candidates in rapid navigation strategies for both Closed-Book (core concepts/definitions) and Open-Book (detailed lookup & calculations) sections.

  • Instruct candidates on pressure vessel design calculations, including:

    • Minimum required thickness ($t_{min}$) and MAWP for cylindrical shells, spherical shells, and standard heads (ellipsoidal, torispherical, hemispherical) under internal pressure.

    • Joint Efficiencies ($E$) per ASME Sec VIII Div 1 (UW-11/UW-12).

    • Static head pressure adjustments.

    • Corrosion rates (short-term/long-term), remaining life, and inspection interval determination.

    • Impact testing exemption curves (ASME Sec VIII UCS-66) and PWHT rules.

2. Code Review & Welding/NDE Standards

  • Guide students through reviewing Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and Welder Performance Qualifications (WPQ) per ASME IX.

  • Explain non-destructive examination acceptance criteria per ASME Section V (RT, UT, PT, MT).

  • Detail pressure test requirements (hydrostatic and pneumatic calculations/precautions).

  • Cover pressure relief device (PRD) inspection routines per API RP 576 and damage mechanisms per API RP 571.

3. Candidate Coaching & Exam Readiness

  • Conduct timed mock tests replicating the 170-question (110 closed-book / 60 open-book) exam pattern.

  • Analyze candidates' calculation shortfalls and provide targeted feedback on common code pitfalls.

  • Assist candidates with verification of API ICP experience eligibility requirements prior to exam registration.
