About this role

What you'll be doing day-to-day.

We are seeking an experienced Corrosion & Materials Specialist or Authorized API Inspector with deep expertise in metallurgy and active plant degradation modes to deliver training for the API 571 Damage Mechanisms Affecting Fixed Equipment in the Refining Industry Certification Exam.

The trainer will lead interactive bootcamps and specialized technical workshops, educating inspection engineers, RBI specialists, metallurgists, and plant integrity teams on identifying, preventing, and mitigating the 60+ specific damage mechanisms detailed in the API 571 Body of Knowledge.

What you'll do

The core responsibilities expected from this role.

1. Curriculum Delivery & Damage Mechanism Breakdown

  • Facilitate structured 3-day to 5-day exam preparation bootcamps (or equivalent virtual evening modules) aligned with the current API 571 ICP exam syllabus.

  • Systematic breakdown of core mechanism profiles, covering:

    • Description & Affected Materials: Carbon steel, low alloys, stainless steels, nickel alloys, and non-metallics.

    • Critical Factors: Temperature ranges, pH levels, stress states, fluid chemistry, velocity, and partial pressures ($H_2S$, $CO_2$, $H_2$).

    • Affected Units: Specific equipment locations across hydroprocessing, FCC, crude distillation, amine, reforme, and utility circuits.

    • Appearance/Morphology: Visual identification, metallurgical degradation, cracking patterns, and wall loss patterns.

    • Prevention & Mitigation: Material upgrades, chemical inhibition, process control limits (Integrity Operating Windows - IOWs), and PWHT.

    • Inspection & NDE: Advanced non-destructive evaluation selection (e.g., PAUT, TOFD, HTHA detection, PEC, Eddy Current, High-Temp UT).

2. Specialized Group Focus Areas

  • Mechanical & Metallurgical Failure Modes: Brittle fracture, thermal fatigue, creep/stress rupture, graphitization, mechanical fatigue, erosion/corrosion, and steam blanketing.

  • Uniform & Localized Organic/Inorganic Corrosion: CUI, sulfidation, naphthenic acid corrosion, MIC, galvanic corrosion, and soil corrosion.

  • Environment-Assisted Cracking (EAC): SCC (Caustic, Chloride, Polythionic Acid), HIC/SOHIC, Wet $H_2S$ cracking, hydrogen embrittlement, and Amine SCC.

  • High-Temperature Degradation: Oxidation, carburization, HTHA (Nelson Curves), decarburization, metal dusting, and hydrogen blistering.

3. Exam Prep & Practice Assessments

  • Conduct practice exams matching the API 571 110-question computer-based testing format.

  • Train candidates on quick identification strategies based on process fluid profiles, metallurgy, and operational temperatures.

  • Analyze candidate weak areas across damage groups and provide targeted coaching.
