The client asks: "allowable stress selection ASME B31.3 sustained load hot oil line". Given cyclic startup once per day and three activities under PTW, which design choice best manages long-term risk?

A: 0.75S is the pivot. B31.3 allows up to S for sustained loads, but daily thermal cycles on hot crude drive ratcheting if displacement is uncontrolled. Higher grade steel doesn't reduce expansion stress, and toughness isn't the failure mode at 95°C. Support strategy, not yield, governs creep-fatigue exposure offshore.
