A: 0.75S is the pivot. B31.3 allows up to S for sustained loads, but daily thermal cycles on hot crude drive ratcheting if displacement is uncontrolled. Higher grade steel doesn't reduce expansion stress, and toughness isn't the failure mode at 95°C. Support strategy, not yield, governs creep-fatigue exposure offshore.

Q: During pre-commissioning offshore, the ITP calls for valve orientation checks. The superintendent Googles "how to verify check valve installation flow direction offshore" while the line is boxed in but depressurised. What's the right verification sequence under time pressure?
