Course details

This course is designed for third- and fourth-year undergraduate Electrical Engineering students to build a strong foundation in electrical power system engineering. It introduces core concepts related to power generation, transmission, and distribution systems used in modern power networks. Students will study underground cables and overhead line insulators, focusing on their construction, performance, and practical applications. The course also covers transient overvoltages and insulation coordination, which are critical for system protection and reliability. Important transmission line phenomena such as corona, sag, and tension are explained with engineering relevance. Distribution system analysis, including distribution load flow and voltage stability, is discussed in detail. The role and application of capacitors in distribution networks for voltage control and loss reduction are emphasized. Load frequency control of both isolated and interconnected power systems is covered in depth. The concept of unit commitment and its importance in economic and reliable operation of power systems is also introduced. By the end of the course, students will gain comprehensive and practical knowledge of key power system engineering concepts.
